Fires Floods and Cyclones

It seems that since coming to Australia, just over two years ago, I have had the opportunity of experiencing the extremes of the Australian climate.  Not only have I had the pleasure of being on the edge of a cyclone, on the edge of the bushfires but now it seems that to top off my Australian experience I can add being on the edge of a flood also.

In my first year of being in Australia I took a three month trip up the east coast of the country.  As I got to Townsville in the far north area of Queensland, we were told that a cyclone was going to hit and to stay indoors.  In this instance we were lucky as we only got the tail end of the cyclone, just some pretty heavy winds.  As we made our way back down the coast we were at risk of being pinned in by another cyclone that was threatening to come in further south, lucky enough it didn’t hit with much force and we got further south to safety, Ah well we experienced as close as I would have liked to get to a cyclone.

All safe in Victoria then, no volatile weather to worry about here, wrong.  Next comes bushfire season where Australia dries out and the country spontaneously combusts.  This was a pretty weird experience as I have never before been in a situation where the sky turns a bright orange and then goes pitch black in the middle of the day and to top it off an eerie silence ensues.  The bush fires were massive and until recently we were still getting the effects of the fires, as ash was still being washed into the river systems.  That was of course until the floods came.

In the past few days we have had a barrage of rain that has caused some pretty widespread damage and flooded the surrounding area.  The river that is nearest to us rose to over 8 meters and I think its normal depth is around 4 so you can imagine that it would have caused a little flooding here and there.  I have taken a ton of photos so I will give another update on this soon when I get a chance to add a few.

So lets hope that it comes in threes and that is all there is to offer, I don’t think an earthquake would be fun !
